Back in mid-2021, Henderson released a video in which he claimed to have heard that the next GTA game would be taking place in a modern setting, though he didn't rule out a return to Vice City at some point in the game. But it avoids being a Mission-Pack Sequel to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City by including a lot of its own elements, such as improved gameplay, mission elements and the ability to swim. Many believe that the game will be set in a fictional version of Miami, though those hoping to dive back into eighties Vice City may well end up disappointed, at least if prominent industry leaker Tom Henderson ends up being correct. Like Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, this game took a new plot to the same setting as a previous Grand Theft Auto game. Of course, that's not to say that Rockstar hadn't been working on the game for some time prior to its announcement, nor that fans of the long-running video game franchise weren't already speculating as to when and where the events of GTA 6 will be taking place. With almost a full decade having separated the release of Grand Theft Auto 5 and the announcement of its predecessor, to say that Grand Theft Auto 6 is a long time in the making would perhaps be a bit of an understatement. Where exactly Grand Theft Auto 6 will fit into the timeline remains to be seen, with many theories on when and where the next installment in the GTA series will be set. With this in mind, understanding the true order in which key events take place can quickly become a challenge, even for the most meticulous of players. Many of the games are set decades before their actual release dates, while others take place in what was once the present day. Updated August 20, 2022, by Tom Bowen: Though not quite as chronologically confusing as Nintendo's Legend of Zelda series, understanding where each of the 14 Grand Theft Auto games fits into the overall timeline is far from easy. With 14 games spanning over 50 in-universe years, however, it can be a little tricky keeping track of what happened when. In fact, it's pretty impressive how Rockstar can make its signature brand of gameplay fit into different time periods. The franchise doesn't change things radically as each of its entries are all still great crime-based games.
